Week 4 Medicine + Technology + Art

Image
Before viewing this week's material I had honestly never seen medical technology in connection with artists. I just hadn’t really thought about it. After reviewing this week's material I can say I became very intrigued with some of these artists. Specifically, I liked Virgil Wong's work. In his ted talk he talks about how he felt disappointed when his mother got sick and he wasn’t able to help because he didn't attend medical school like his parents wanted him to. His mother said “ Medicine helps us live longer lives but art is about how we live.”      Virgil Wong with his artistic and technological expertise was able to  help co-create the Medical Avatar. The medical avatar is a state of the art visualization tool for patients to reduce costs and improve outcomes. The medical avatar helps visualize medical images of patients. One of the big problems with modern medicine is that unless people are doing regular checkups a lot of sicknesses ca...

Event 1

Image
For my first event I attended an event  hosted by Patricia Cadvidad. Her presentation was based on her work which is looking at the relationships and effects of coloniality in new media and sound from the migratory experience and decolonial & anti-colonial thinking. At first I wasn’t really quite sure what to expect. As the event began Cadvidad explained how before colonization occurred there was no distinction between science and art. That separation came much later. In fact many objects were created using both science and art as a foundation.  The first object shown in the khipu. The khipu is an art and scientific instrument. This instrument was used by Ancient Andean cultures like the Incas to record and communicate information by using strings and knots. Cavidad created the electronic khipu. This object was created as a musical instrument and even created a whole spotify album. Every single knot o...

Week 3 Robotics and Art

Over time the development of industrialization has grown significantly and has changed the world around us. The progression of mechanics has caused industrialization to change the way countries have been able to develop. For example the invention of the steam engine completely changed the way America was run. It helped power the industrial revolution as it created a new power source for factories and mills to run more efficiently. This new source of energy revolutionized the economy and future of America. The only real downside to the growth of industrialization is the lack of humans that will be required in the future. As factories become advanced they will require less and less man made work.      Walter Benjamin in "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" talks about how art from the past has evolved and is much different now. With the evolution of industrialization the technique ...

Week 2 Art and Math

Image
After watching this week's lecture videos and studying the articles from this week's resources  I have gained a much further perspective on how important math is to art. I’ve always been a big math person and pretty much avoided art as much as possible. I  had never realized how math played a role in art, especially when considering  the perfect ratios  and spaces for art pieces.   The Golden Ratio in Art Is One of the Coolest ... - Craftwhack . https://craftwhack.com/the-golden-ratio-in-art/.                     Theo Jansen in his Ted talk shows off his kinetic sculptures to the world. By using plastic tubes and lemonade bottles he designs a species of creatures designed to be able to survive living on the beach. His creatures are a form of art  that requires ...

Week 1: Two Cultures

Image
The lecture videos  and the articles  I read argue that the world  is viewed from two different cultures , art and science. These two cultures are considered to be streets apart from each other. People of artistic culture are considered to be more creative minded while people of scientific culture are considered more analytical. When talking about colleges , people in science majors   are usually considered smarter. Science majors are seen as the hardest majors on campus, while art majors are seen as the easiest ones. When looking at the statistics , literature and liberal art majors have the highest acceptance rates.       King, Lindy. “10 Easiest Transfer Majors: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD.” CA College Transfer , 5 May 2017, http://cacollegetransfer.com/2017/01/10-easiest-majors-for-transfers-to-uc-berkeley-and-ucla/.      I've always been very science minded.  I always excelled in science/math based subjects ...
