Week 9 Space and Art

     Space has always been and will arguably always be an interesting topic. There is still so much to be learned about space. Here in the U.S we have the biggest space program in the world in NASA. We also have Space X which is a private spaceflight company owned by Elon Musk. But for me one space and art project  that caught my attention was The Cultural Center of European Space Technologies (KSEVT). This place is “More than just a building, which in itself is a gigantic work of conceptual art. It is a unique institution dedicated to the culturalization of the universe.” (Marie Lechner)

    The creation of this building is regarded as the greatest event to occur in Slovenia since they received their independence.  The building showcases  the local cultural and social activities of a  former Community Center in Vitanje, a town in Slovenia.  Vitanje was the home to the first theoretician of space, Herman Potocnik Noordung. The building is designed to essentially have two buildings in one: a local community center with a circular multi-purpose hall and local library and the museum of Space technologies with its exhibition and research areas. The surrounding areas of the KSEVT help create this uniqueness the building has to it. I’ve never really thought of visiting Slovenia but after seeing all the pictures and learning what KSEVT has to offer it has suddenly become appealing to do so.

    Before viewing this week's material I had honestly never seen medical technology in connection with artists. I just hadn’t really thought about it. After reviewing this week's material I can say I became very intrigued with some of these artists. Specifically, I liked Virgil Wong's work. In his ted talk he talks about how he felt disappointed when his mother got sick and he wasn’t able to help because he didn't attend medical school like his parents wanted him to. His mother said “ Medicine helps us live longer lives but art is about how we live.”      Virgil Wong with his artistic and technological expertise was able to  help co-create the Medical Avatar. Event 2

       The event I chose to attend was hosted by Jessica Irish. During her presentation she shows and talks about her short documentary film The Moral Plastik.  It's a film talking about one of the biggest active crises , the plastic crisis. When the documentary began my initial reactions were on how sophisticated everything was. The world play and knowledge being thrown help elevate the quality of the film.      To really touch the audience the main approach Ms Irish uses  in her documentary is an emotional one. She does include some statistics to back up her claim but she mainly focuses on using pathos. She talks about her daughter, mother and grandmother and how this problem has potentially affected their lives.  She talks about the lives of the animals and explains how sad it is that their lives are being taken away from these plastics. She also mentions how new industry plants are taking over pieces of land that many consider ...

            For this event I went to a color light motion by Toni Dove. Toni Dove essentially creates hybrid performance, installation and screen-based art that incorporates  film, game or instrument-based interaction with experimental theater. I was relatively new to this as I had never really seen any color light motion projects before. But I did find them to be quite unique and enjoyable. During the course of the  presentation Dove showed  different projects. The first project that she showed was a show called the lasso. These yellow lights were moving around everywhere while a blue sculpture was there in the background.  It demonstrated a thing called an  uncanny bell where the motion based sculpture looks almost like a human.      The next project she showed off was a show called Lucid Possession.
